Blending Design and WordPress: Speaking at WordCamp Nepal 2024
My experience taking the stage at WordCamp Nepal 2024 to discuss the intersection of design principles, lesser-known WordPress features, and user-friendly site building.
From Print Design to the Main Stage
If you've followed my journey, you know my roots in the WordPress community started deeply embedded in design—from creating visual assets and banners for WordCamp Bharatpur and Butwal to leading Print and Production at WordCamp Nepal 2022 and speaking on localization at WordCamp Kathmandu 2023.
At WordCamp Nepal 2024, my journey came full circle as I took the main stage once again to speak about the very foundation that brought me into this community: the intersection of thoughtful design systems and modern WordPress development.
The Session: Blending Design and WordPress
My 2024 speaker session focused on how we can push the boundaries of what WordPress can do aesthetically while maintaining peak performance, responsiveness, and clean accessibility. Rather than treating design as an afterthought or mere styling applied on top of code, the session explored designing intentionally with WordPress's modern toolset.
The core pillars of my talk included:
- Core Design Principles: How to translate fundamental design theories—such as visual hierarchy, proportional typographic scales, modular spacing scales, and negative space—directly within the WordPress block theme ecosystem.
- Lesser-Known WordPress Features: Unlocking hidden gems within the modern editor, theme.json presets, fluid typography controls, and core layout options that empower designers and site builders to construct bespoke layouts effortlessly without bloated page-builder overhead.
- Building Responsive, User-Friendly Sites: Bridging the gap between Figma mockups and living production websites. Practical techniques for fluid responsiveness, touch targets on mobile devices, and semantic HTML structure that users and assistive technologies love to navigate.
Why Design Matters in Open Source
Often, tech conferences lean heavily into backend engineering, server infrastructure, and code syntax. However, presenting on design at a flagship community event was an important reminder: the user interface is how the world experiences our code.
A responsive, user-friendly design isn't a luxury; it's a necessity. No matter how clean a backend API or custom plugin architecture might be, if the interface confuses users, creates friction, or breaks on mobile viewports, the site fails its mission.
Being a speaker at WordCamp Nepal 2024 was deeply fulfilling. It gave me the opportunity to give back the knowledge and practical workflows I've accumulated over years of building client projects, managing production assets, and contributing to the wider WordPress community.
