From Print Design to the Main Stage
If you've followed my journey, you know my roots in the WordPress community started deeply embedded in design, from creating visual assets and banners for WordCamp Bharatpur and Butwal to leading Print and Production at WordCamp Nepal 2022 and speaking on localization at WordCamp Kathmandu 2023.
At WordCamp Nepal 2024, my journey came full circle as I took the main stage once again to present: “Exploring the Hidden Treasures: A Fusion of Design and WordPress Magic”.
The Session: Exploring the Hidden Treasures
My 2024 speaker session focused on how we can push the boundaries of what WordPress can do aesthetically while maintaining peak performance, responsiveness, and clean accessibility. Rather than treating design as an afterthought or mere styling applied on top of code, the session explored designing intentionally with WordPress's modern toolset.
The talk rested on three pillars: design principles, lesser-known WordPress features, and responsive site building.
On design principles, I covered translating fundamental design theories, things like visual hierarchy, proportional typographic scales, modular spacing scales, and negative space, directly within the WordPress block theme ecosystem. On lesser-known WordPress features, I looked at hidden gems in the modern editor, theme.json presets, fluid typography controls, and core layout options that let designers and site builders construct custom layouts without bloated page-builder overhead. And on responsive, user-friendly sites, I bridged the gap between Figma mockups and living production websites, with practical techniques for fluid responsiveness, mobile touch targets, and semantic HTML that users and assistive technologies can navigate easily.
Why Design Matters in Open Source
Often, tech conferences lean heavily into backend engineering, server infrastructure, and code syntax. However, presenting on design at a flagship community event was an important reminder: the user interface is how the world experiences our code.
A responsive, user-friendly design isn't a luxury; it's a necessity. No matter how clean a backend API or custom plugin architecture might be, if the interface confuses users, creates friction, or breaks on mobile viewports, the site fails its mission.
Community, Connections, and Memories
Beyond the presentation on stage, what truly makes WordCamp Nepal unforgettable is the incredible community. Reconnecting with fellow contributors, speakers, and the organizing team was the highlight of the event.
Being a speaker at WordCamp Nepal 2024 was deeply fulfilling. It gave me the opportunity to give back the knowledge and practical workflows I've accumulated over years of building client projects, managing production assets, and contributing to the wider WordPress community, a journey that continues with volunteering at WordCamp US 2026 in Phoenix.
Whether you are a developer, designer, or agency builder, approaching WordPress with a design-first mindset improves everything you ship. That same design-first approach carries over when I'm building custom Next.js and React applications rather than WordPress themes.
