Achieving the Milestone: 100% Nepali Translation at WordCamp Nepal 2022
Reflecting on my role as the Contribution Day Table Lead at WordCamp Nepal 2022, where our Polyglots team achieved a 100% Nepali translation for WordPress.
The Heart of Open Source: Contribution Day
WordCamps are about far more than just listening to presentations and networking in the hallway track; they are about giving back to the platform that powers our careers and communities. At WordCamp Nepal 2022 held at Chitwan Garden Resort, Contributor Day proved to be one of the most historic moments for the Nepali open-source ecosystem.
Alongside my responsibilities leading the Print and Production team for the main event, I had the distinct honor of serving as the Contribution Day Table Lead for the Nepali WordPress Polyglots team.
Our mission for the day was clear but formidable: to bridge the remaining language gap and push the Nepali translation of WordPress core across the finish line.
Leading the Translation Charge
Translating software as expansive as WordPress requires rigorous coordination, linguistic consistency, and an energized team. As the Table Lead, my role involved onboarding first-time contributors, guiding them through the GlotPress interface, establishing glossary standards, and reviewing submitted strings to ensure they made natural, contextual sense for native Nepali speakers.
The energy at the table was electric. We had software developers, content creators, students, and seasoned translators all collaborating side-by-side. It was a beautiful display of how technology can transcend raw code to become a community-driven cultural and linguistic effort.
Hitting the 100% Mark
By the end of Contributor Day, our collective keyboards fell silent to a round of applause that echoed across the resort hall. We did it. We led the Nepali WordPress Polyglots team to achieve a 100% Nepali translation of WordPress core.
Reaching 100% is not just a vanity metric. It means that an entire demographic of users in Nepal—teachers, small business owners, government institutions, and non-English speakers—can now navigate, build, and publish on the web in their native mother tongue without barriers. It truly democratizes the web publishing experience, which is the foundational ethos of WordPress.
A Milestone, Not a Finish Line
While hitting 100% at WordCamp Nepal 2022 was a monumental milestone, language and software are constantly evolving. With every core release, block editor iteration, and feature update, new strings must be localized and reviewed.
This milestone laid the groundwork for my continued journey as an active General Translation Editor for WordPress Nepali, which later led to taking the stage at WordCamp Kathmandu 2023 to speak on localization and inclusivity.
It stands as an enduring reminder of what an energized, united community can accomplish when working together toward a common purpose.
