Beyond WordPress: My Journey as a Package Maintainer for UbuntuDDE Remix
Expanding my open-source contributions as a Package Maintainer for UbuntuDDE Remix, working towards making it an official Ubuntu flavour.

Expanding Open Source Horizons
While much of my public tech journey has been closely tied to WordPress—from organizing WordCamps and translating core into Nepali to speaking on design and responsive interfaces—my passion for open-source software extends far beyond web publishing.
Currently, I am proudly contributing to the Linux ecosystem as an ongoing Package Maintainer for UbuntuDDE Remix.
Working directly on an operating system distribution allows me to combine my love for polished user interfaces with low-level systems engineering. It bridges the gap between the server technologies I use daily to host and migrate web applications and the everyday desktop experience.
What is UbuntuDDE Remix?
For those unfamiliar, UbuntuDDE Remix is a stunning Linux distribution that combines the rock-solid stability and comprehensive package repositories of Ubuntu with the beautiful, modern Deepin Desktop Environment (DDE).
It aims to offer one of the most visually appealing, intuitive, and user-friendly desktop experiences in the Linux world. From its fluid translucent control center and rounded dock to seamless system settings, UbuntuDDE delivers a premium, out-of-the-box desktop operating system for creators, developers, and everyday computer users alike.

My Role: Package Maintainer
The lifeblood of any Linux distribution is its packaging infrastructure. A desktop environment is not a single monolithic program; it is composed of dozens of interconnected libraries, daemons, shell plugins, display managers, audio controllers, and UI toolkits.
As a Package Maintainer, my ongoing responsibilities involve:
- Upstream Synchronization & Packaging: Packaging the latest Deepin desktop components, file managers, and desktop widgets into standard Debian
.debpackages configured for Ubuntu's build system. - Dependency Management & Compatibility: Ensuring that packages remain fully compatible with the underlying Ubuntu LTS and interim release bases without breaking shared system libraries.
- Security & Bug Triage: Rigorously testing packages in staging environments, isolating segmentation faults, patching broken dependencies, and collaborating with our global team of maintainers.
- Continuous Integration & Repository Maintenance: Managing Launchpad PPA builds and release archives to deliver seamless
apt upgradepaths to our users worldwide.
This level of packaging and systems troubleshooting reinforces the same engineering principles I rely on when resolving critical server crashes or investigating server-level security intrusions.
The Ultimate Goal: Official Flavour Status
Our international team shares an ambitious, focused roadmap: elevating UbuntuDDE Remix to become an official Ubuntu flavour recognized by Canonical.
Achieving official flavour status (joining distros like Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Ubuntu Budgie) means:
- Direct integration into Canonical's official build infrastructure and automated test suites.
- Official release images hosted directly on Ubuntu mirror networks worldwide.
- Long-term support alignment alongside official Ubuntu releases.
Contributing to an operating system is uniquely challenging, but immensely rewarding. It has sharpened my technical workflows, broadened my collaboration with developers across different continents, and deepened my appreciation for the open-source foundations powering the modern digital landscape.
